Who We Are

Hamline Elementary is a racially, culturally, and economically diverse community of learners in the heart of Saint Paul's Hamline Midway neighborhood. Each week, our students (pre-k through 5th grade) have the opportunity to visit and learn with college students from across the street at Hamline University.

Mission: Empower children to become critical thinkers, co-creators in their learning experiences, and to discover and explore their passions.

Vision: We are dedicated to being a school where learning is connected to the lives of students and their community. A place where students wonder, ask questions, investigate, and collaborate to create meaning. A place where instruction and curriculum cultivate student interest and strengths, and values students for who they are. Our commitment to creating equitable outcomes for every learner gives each student the tools they need to succeed within, and beyond, the classroom.

Our Why: At Hamline Elementary, we believe in the capacity and brilliance of every child, and our collective ability to impact learning.

What We Do

Hamline University and Hamline Elementary have been partners in education for over 100 years.

In 1991, this partnership between Hamline University and Hamline Elementary officially became the first university-elementary partnership of its kind in the country.

The Hamline-to-Hamline Collaboration provides one-of-a-kind opportunities such as:

Tutoring Program: More than 50 university students work in classrooms to tailor instruction to small groups of students and create lower adult-to-student ratios.

Hand-in-Hand Mentoring: Hamline Elementary students build one-on-one relationships with university students.

Student-Athlete Cafeteria Volunteers: HU student-athletes from various sports teams spend time in the lunchroom supporting and connecting with elementary students.

Academic Pairings: University departments create enrichment programs for different grade and skill levels such as kindergarten gymnastics, archaeology digs, and mock trial for fifth graders.

Snelling Connection: Hamline Elementary student journalists create a newspaper with guidance from University students.

Hamline Elementary is also a full-service community school, integrating high-quality academics with health and social services for all members of our school community. With a dedicated Family Room and a team of staff and community members working together to coordinate purposeful partnerships, our school can streamline access to important services and resources, remove barriers, provide empowering and compassionate support, and build a foundation for students to thrive both inside and outside of the classroom.
